Phoenix's Story

|
We received a call Thursday, 4-23-09 around 1:00 from a Dickson County resident whose neighbor’s 6 month old puppy had been struck by a car, this was the second time within a month he had been hit. She was upset that his owner, who had not taken him to the vet after the first accident, and let him suffer with a broken leg, wasn’t going to take him this time either. She had already contacted Animal Control, Humane Society, Police Dept, and couldn’t get anyone to help. We told her we would go to the house and try to persuade the owner to surrender his dog to the rescue. When I arrived I found a dog not only in pain and unable to walk, but also covered in ticks. While picking them off, the dog’s owner and I discussed his ability to properly care for this animal, and why he was running loose in the road, etc. After what seemed like hours, he finally agreed to let me take the puppy. I left the property with the sweet boy we now call Phoenix! Off to Dr. Lindsay
His spirits are very high, like he knows we are going to help him, and that we care. You can see a different look on his face now. He seems focused, and trusting of us. I know he must be in pain, but he doesn't want you to know. He tries so hard to get up and walk. He actually sticks his neck out, leans forward until both back feet are off the ground, balances, and walks a few steps on only his front two legs. I've never seen as much will and determination in my life! Two broken hips, both legs broken, deteriorated muscle in one leg from past injury (first time he was hit by a car). The vet said all that's holding the leg together, and in place is muscle, the bone in BOTH rear legs is completely un-attached from the hip, broken from the socket, but I have yet to hear a whimper. I have yet to see self pity, only tail wagging, and excitement when a human enters the room, with a look in his eyes that says, don't be sad for me, it doesn't hurt, really. I can get through this, I'll be OK, and I am really a normal dog, really. I know the truth, he has to be in unbearable pain, somehow masked by strength, courage, drive to survive, the willingness to please, determination, the undying love for humans, the fight to make us proud, the need to be accepted, and the painful struggle to hold the heavy name, our American Pit Bull Terrier.

Phoenix had his surgery at Dr. Lindsay’s office Monday 4-27-09. She did her best to repair one back leg; the other one is too far gone. Phoenix’s surgery is around $1,000.00, which we don't have. We do not receive funding or grant money, we run the rescue strictly out of our own pockets. We don’t often ask for help, but this time we are going to have to call on our wonderful supporters. Remember, Every dollar counts, if 100 people donated $10.00, we would reach our goal.
You can make your donation directly to Dr. Lindsay’s office in Dickson 615-446-7991 or use the Donate button below.
**Feel free to call Eleven:Eleven Bully Rescue at 615-788-5428 for other arrangements.**
Thank you for your help and support ~Phoenix
UPDATE: Phoenix has found his forever family, and a new adopted sister. He is spoiled rotten and treated like a king. We miss him so much, but glad he has the family he deserves. Eleven:Eleven will NEVER forget the flight of our Phoenix.
